Mushroom Pepper Curry

Mushroom pepper curry or koomb molishyam is a typical kerala style preparation. It's simple and easy to make and doesn't require a whole lot of ingredients.
The combination of pepper and garlic curry are supposed to be having medicinal properties. It's a must have in our postpartum diet sans the mushroom(optional),recommended by the elders in our community.

You need:
Fresh mushrooms - 1 cup button or oyster mushrooms ,cleaned and cut to small pieces
Onions - 1 medium size thinly sliced ( if you can get hold of shallots, they are the best)
Garlic - 5-6 cloves crushed
Curry leaves - one sprig
Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder - 1 tsp ( adjust based on your tolerance)
Salt to taste
Coconut oil - 1 tbsp

Method:
In a earthen pot ( or a kadhai) put together mushrooms, onions, garlic, curry leaves, the masalas with about half a cup of water and mix well with your hands.Put it to boil until the onions and mushrooms are cooked and are soft. When you taste the curry, the raw taste of coriander powder should not be there. The mixture becomes thick as you reduce. You can add a little more water and adjust the consistency of the gravy.
Temper with onions and curry leaves sauteed in coconut oil.
Serve hot with rice or dosas.

Strawberry shrikhand

I have been experimenting with different flavours of Shrikhand ever since my boy showed his love for it.
Strawberry shrikhand turned out be really yummy and my little one finished it in no time!

You Need:
Fresh Curd - 2 cups
Sugar - 2 tbsp ( or as needed)
Fresh Strawberries - 8 ripe medium size

To prepare hung curd:  In a muslin cloth, hang fresh curd overnight, so that all the water is drained and a think white mass if left. This is hung curd.Refrigerate it.

Method: Powder the sugar and mix it with hung curd.Keep mixing with a large spoon. The crumbled form of hung curd soon changes to a thick and smooth liquid.Puree the strawberries.Add this to the hung curd mixture and mix well.Chill it.
Strawberry shrikhand is ready!

The best thing I like about shrikhand is, it forms a lovely, crunchy and tasty dessert without any preservatives and other artificial additives. So no guilts while feeding it to kids. And goodness of fruits is an added advantage.
